Just finished my budget NAS build using a used HP DL380 Gen9 ($120 on eBay), 24x 8TB Seagate Exos drives ($560 total), and a used HBA in IT mode ($35). Running TrueNAS Scale with a 3-wide RAIDZ2 topology across 4 vdevs. Getting ~1.1GB/s sequential on a 10GbE link. Very happy for the price.

That's an incredible price per TB. How's the power consumption? Gen9 DL380s are not exactly known for being efficient.

Drawing about 280W at idle with all drives spun up. Not ideal, but at $0.12/kWh it's acceptable. Drives spin down after 30min idle which helps.
